It was in the 1930’s that women began to experiment with hair color. Initially, this was used only for the purpose of dying the hair on one’s head, but eventually, the same principles would be applied to make it easier to disguise unwanted hair elsewhere on the body. In those earliest days of dying, women risked serious burns and reactions to the dye, which was a mixture of peroxide and ammonia. It was essential that the ratio be exact or very critical complications could arise. Even before that, however, for thousands of years, people experimented with different plants and minerals to change hair color.
Hair Color As We Know It Today, bleaching and hair dying has become a more evolved science and is far less risky than it once was. Commercial products are marketed for the specific purpose of disguising body hair. Hydrogen peroxide remains a very typical ingredient in dyes meant for bleaching purposes, but additional ingredients are meant to protect against poor reactions.
Easy Application While some areas of hair are best treated with Austin laser hair removal, facial hair can often be disguised quite effectively with bleaches. A cream mixture is provided in the over the counter kits, which is typically applied with a simple spatula-like device. The thick cream stays in place, over the unwanted hair for a specified period of time – approximately ten minutes for most bleaching kits – and then is simply rinsed away.
Potential Risks For most people, this process is safe and effective. However, there are some risks for certain individuals. Those with sensitive skin or who respond poorly to the ingredients in the bleach kit may experience stinging or burning sensations and potential redness after the product is removed. In extreme cases, there may be blistering. For this reason, most manufacturers and experts will recommend a test be done on a smaller patch of skin in an area that is not as visible or sensitive. This test should be done at least twenty-four hours before treating the desired area, following directions exactly – including leaving the cream in place for the recommended period of time. If there is excessive burning, redness, or signs of any blistering, do not use the product again.
The Reality Bleaching can be very effective for some hair types, making it possible for those with darker hair avoid an unwanted shadow across the lip or the look of sideburns in front of the ears. However, certain darker skin types can see a difference in skin tone after bleaching that may remain noticeable for several days. Long or overly thick hairs will likely be more challenging to bleach as well. If the process does not give the desired results, there are other options for hair removal that will be more effective and longer lasting.
The Cost The best news for women trying to disguise unsightly facial hair is that bleach kits are not expensive. Purchased over the counter in nearly every drug store, the kits will generally be priced between five and ten dollars. Of course, treating larger areas may require more than one kit to ensure that there is enough of the bleaching cream available to appropriately cover the region.
