about the artisty people
Mike Moto began his comedy career over a decade ago, in Berkeley. Moto quickly became a favorite at the more conventional comedy clubs such as the Punchline and the Holy City Zoo. The demands of nightclub work soon forced him to abandon his studies at Berkeley, where he is still on leave of absence. Searching for new challenges, Mike Moto moved to the East coast, where he proceeded to become one of Boston's top comics, as well as a regular at The Improv, and The Comic Strip in New York. He worked every comedy club in Boston, and showcased in two college entertainment conventions (NACA), becoming a favorite on the New England college circuit, and Boston Comedy Competition finalist. Mike Moto has moved back to San Francisco, and is rapidly regaining recognition as one of the city's top comics. He headlines clubs across the country. He starred in and wrote for Open Mike, a comedy show aired in Boston, and has appeared numerous times on the Comedy Channel. He filmed a multicultural comedy special for PBS, titled COMICS A-Z. samantha chanse is a writer & performer who moved to the bay area in 2001 and has been bitching about the weather ever since (although, admittedly, the bitching has subsided in intensity, somewhat, over the years). a native new yorker with a knack for public humiliation, she finds the sf bay area frightfully yet compellingly incestuous, and is involved in a lovehate relationship with her cyberdominion, whiskeyandacigarette.org. if you question her claim to a dot org address, samanthachanse .com works too & may be easier to remember. or not, depending.
Tessie Chua is one tell-it-like-it-is kinda lady. Chua's comedy career has and taken off and this San Francisco favorite is amazing audiences with her highly ascerbic, yet insanely sensitive point of view on daily life. Check her out on tessiechua.com.
Darby Li Po Price (Chinese, Scots, Welsh, Cherokee) teaches Ethnic Studies at Mills College. He completed a doctorate in Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, with a dissertation on multiracial comedians. His essays on performance have been published in Amerasia Journal, The American Indian Culture and Research Journal, Critical Mass: A Journal of Asian American Cultural Criticism, Interrace, and several anthologies. Darby has produced and directed the documentary videos: "Asian American Comedians," "The Fight for Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley," and is currently collaborating on a documentary about multiracial comedians for PBS. As a rock singer and guitarist, he gigs with lead guitarist Toku Wu and/or bass guitarist
Neal Cronin.
As a stand-up comedian, Brent Weinbach has gained a particularly favorable reputation in both the underground and mainstream San Francisco scenes. Through an unconventional and quirky style, Brent combines absurdism, physical humor, and cultural characterizations with an innocent and intellectual sophistication. As the Weinbach cult following continues to develop, fans all over the Bay Area and beyond can be seen wearing the increasingly fashionable "Weinbach" t-shirt. Brent Weinbach has performed as part of the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, was highlighted in New York Magazine as a "Name To Watch," and appeared on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson only to have his segment cut by a network executive for being too weird.
Toku Wu, guitarist extraordinaire rock n' roll Buddha, is the fiery lead guitarist for the world beat band Odori Simcha, which fuses Eastern, and Western influences.
www.nealcronin.com/Odori_Simcha.html Toku is also a guitarist for a jazz duo with vocalist Julie Cohn. Toku (Japanese, Chinese) relocated from Japan to California to become a rock star.
